Description
Common Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is a multi-stem shrub that grows well along riverbanks, lakes, and swamps. It prefers moist soil. It typically grows about 8-12′ high but can reach up to 20′ high in certain situations. Buttonbush flowers June-September with white “pin-cushion” flowers followed by showy brownish fruit that persists into the winter.
The seeds make great food for ducks and other shorebirds, while the flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
