Description
The Scotch pine is a longtime favorite for reforestation. They are fast growers, some years attaining 4′ growth. These Pines are also useful for windbreaks and specimen trees. Although it has slipped in popularity in recent years many people still buy scotch pine for Christmas trees. Native to Eurasia but has acclimated well in the States. I have a big Scots Pine growing near the green barn, about 45 years old, a foot plus in diameter and is keeping up with the White Pine of the same age.
Scotch pine have interesting orangish-brown, flaky bark with relatively short, twisted bluish needles in bundles of two. Pine trees have small cones that do not have prickles on the back of their scales, like most cones do. They are also the national tree of Scotland. It is also known by the common name of Scots pine.
