Description
The Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) is a fast-growing shade tree known for its dense canopy. While it can adapt to most environments, it thrives in rich, well-drained soil. In early spring (typically May to June), the tree produces vibrant yellow-green flower clusters. Its fruit is the classic “whirlybird” seed; featuring the widest spread of all maple seeds, the wings grow in the shape of a recurved bow.
Native to Europe, this species is one of five non-native maples commonly grown in North America and fares well against common maple pests. The wood is hard and close-grained, making it excellent firewood.
Sun scald is a significant issue for the Norway Maple (photo #4) and can be fatal if left untreated. See link below.
