Eastern Hophornbeam

Price range: $4.35 through $5.75

Hophornbeam or Ironwood is a small understory tree that is excellent firewood.

Description

Eastern Hophornbeam is an understory tree found mainly east of the Mississippi river. It is quite often confused with Musclewood or Blue Beech. On the farm it is my preferred firewood as it is an amazingly dense wood. I find the ironwood seems to tip over at the ground level when it dies and it is easy to cut up and throw in the truck. It is usually about 6 to 10 inches in diameter when I harvest it. Northern Woodlands has an interesting article about Hophornbeam. Our other understory trees.
