Blue Spruce or Colorado Spruce is known for its attractive blue-green or silvery-blue needles and symmetrical shape; Spruce trees make great nesting and cover for birds and wildlife.

Description

Blue Spruce is probably the best known and loved ornamental evergreen in the US. Originally found only in the Rocky mountains but spread since the early 1900’s to all of the northern states. In recent years needle cast has caused significant problems with ornamental Blue Spruce causing browning and needle drop on the lower branches. Plant where there is good air drainage.

When growing for Christmas trees, watch out for spruce bites, as my daughters called the red, itchy spots on their arms caused by the pokey needles. The Black Hill Spruce is a good alternative to the Blue as it has a light blue color without the sharp needles.
